Description

Louis-Gabriel Moreau, called Moreau l’Aîné (The Elder)
(Paris, 1740 – Paris, 1806)
Member of the Académie de Saint-Luc & Painter to the Comte d’Artois

An elegant, masterfully executed pair of companion vedute (cityscapes) capturing iconic, lost architectural monuments of pre-Revolutionary Paris.
Rendered in the refined gouache technique characteristic of Louis-Gabriel Moreau, both compositions are highly animated with elegantly dressed aristocrats, local working-class figures (such as riverside washerwomen), and horse-drawn carriages—bringing the daily rhythm of 18th-century Paris vividly to life.

• View I: Le Pont Neuf et la Pompe de la Samaritaine

A nostalgic vista looking across the Seine toward the Pont Neuf. The focal point is the celebrated Pompe de la Samaritaine, the multi-story hydraulic water-pumping station adorned with its historic monumental clock, cupola, and heavy under-bridge waterwheel framework (demolished in 1813). In the far background, the architectural towers of Notre-Dame Cathedral rise gracefully above the horizon line.

• View II: La Bastille et la Porte Saint-Antoine

A formidable historic profile of the medieval Bastille fortress, rendering its characteristic eight stone towers and defensive earthwork bastions prior to its historic storming and total demolition in 1789. Standing adjacently on the right is the ornate Porte Saint-Antoine, the historic triumphal gateway originally designed by François Blondel under Louis XIV.

Art Historical Context
Celebrated for his luminous landscapes and topographical views of Paris and its surrounding estates, Moreau l'Aîné was a foundational figure in late 18th-century French landscape art. Admitted to the prestigious Académie de Saint-Luc and appointed as the official painter to the Comte d'Artois (the youngest brother of Louis XVI and the future King Charles X), Moreau specialized in capturing architectural structures with a brilliant understanding of natural light and atmospheric perspective. These works perfectly exemplify his preferred medium of gouache, treated with the precision of a topographer and the romanticism of a pre-revolutionary master.

Provenance & Framer Ephemera
The reverse sides of the pair preserve layers of historical framing and prestigious lineage, documenting their journey through prominent European art markets:
• Historical Paris Labels: The inner backings preserve the historic late 19th early 20th-century history of the artworks from their time in the premier French art market. Both pieces retain the identical historic oval ink stamp of Gabriel Brossard, Custom Framer and Art Supplier, located at 59, Rue La Boétie, Paris—the absolute epicenter of the international Parisian fine art trade from the late 1800’s until pre war WWII. They are accompanied by matching, antique sequential blue-bordered Brossard gallery inventory labels hand-titled "Pont Neuf 1643" and "Bastille 1706", alongside repurposed 17th-century antiquarian book leaves used by the workshop. This antique conservation technique known as doublage was used to conserve fine paper works by mounting them on to heavy ‘recycled’ ancient Rag Paper, well known for its rigidity.

• Modern London Reframing: The pair has been recently and professionally conserved and reframed by Abbey Road Framing (67 Abbey Road, St John’s Wood, London, NW8 0AE), retaining the original historical elements while ensuring archival protection and an elegant, modern gallery presentation.

Condition Report
The gouache layers remain beautifully bright, stable, and remarkably fresh, showcasing excellent preservation of fine architectural and figurative details. The modern archival framing by Abbey Road Framing is pristine. An extraordinary, fully documented, and pristine set by a highly collected 18th-century French master.
