Condition Report
Prints exhibit age-appropriate slight sun bleaching and even toning inside the window mats, which does not distract from the clarity of the imagery.
The original carved giltwood frames remain structurally sound and intact, retaining their historic patina with expected minor surface wear and light gilt loss consistent with age. Images remain sharp with fine impression detail.
Catalogue Note
This exquisite pair of original prints represents two of the most visually compelling and sought-after plates from André Lambert’s iconic 1918 portfolio illustrating the Seven Deadly Sins.
Masterfully executed using a delicate blend of fine line etching and rich aquatint shading, Lambert's series cleverly subverts classical allegories into intimate, satirical, and highly stylized Parisian boudoir scenes.
The pair is beautifully preserved in its original, hand-carved Art Nouveau gilt wood frames, offering an authentic, untouched window into post-WWI French illustrative erotica and high-society satire.
Individual Scene Analyses:
• L'Orgueil (Pride):
An elegant exploration of vanity and self-absorption. The composition centers on a statuesque nude woman standing proudly in a lavish dressing room. Draped in a heavy, luxurious, fur-lined cloak, she turns her gaze inward to admire her reflection in a large mahogany vanity mirror. To her left, a fully-enraptured Pierrot looks on with a prayerful, submissive posture, heightening the theatricality and psychological depth of the scene.
The ‘ Doublage’ mounting is upon 17th century Bible page from James Chapter IV in Latin
The hand written poem beneath this etching reads
L’Orgueil
orgueilleuse beauté vous me prisez à fort dans la main du destin vos charmes ça me semble. les ardeurs de pierrot qui vous adore et tremble ne peuvent balancer ni t’amour ni la mort
Pride
Proud beauty, you hold me firmly in the grip of destiny—or so it seems to me. The ardor of Pierrot, who adores and trembles before you, can weigh against neither love nor death.
• La Paresse (Sloth):
A masterful composition capturing the essence of total indulgence, luxury, and Orientalist exoticism popular in early 20th-century French art.
In the foreground, a nude woman sprawls languidly across a bed of richly patterned Art Nouveau floral cushions, her back turned to the viewer as she rests in complete afternoon lethargy. To her left, two companion figures recline together on a daybed, while a statuesque standing nude wearing an exotic turban acts as a silent attendant. Dominating the upper center is an elaborate, heavily carved mirror frame inscribed with the word "AETERNITAS" (Eternity), framing a seated Eastern deity that serves as a satirical symbol of timeless, motionless detachment from labor.
The ‘Doublage’ mounting is upon 17th Century French Latin dictionary page commencing ‘SE’
The poem beneath this etching reads
La Paresse
mes amis - la paresse est une fille aimable. l’en vont guidés parelle et tous nos appétits vers so donne et cythère et lesbos nos esprits. la suivant engourdis en un monde exécrable
Idleness
My friends—laziness is a charming mistress. Guided by her, all our appetites and spirits are led toward Sodom, Cythera, and Lesbos; following her, we grow numb in a wretched world.
Top note - Latin inscription
otium et reces prius et beatas perdidit urbes
Leisure and retirement first ruined the prosperous cities.
